Thoughts from BARBARA BLOOM
Out the window where I live and work in downtown Manhattan, 9:00 a.m., March 27, 2020

In the words of the great composer and dear friend Robert Ashley when asked if he wanted go for a walk: “A nice day outside is a nice day inside.” #barbarabloom #viewfrommywindow #newyork #robertashley #manhattan #capitainpetzel.

Check online MATT MULLICAN’s current survey exhibition ‘Representing the Work' at @macshornu, up through Oct 18th. MAC’s presents the first retrospective in Belgium of the Californian artist Matt Mullican. Since the early 1970s, Matt Mullican has sought to structure the world and to understand it using various supports (stone slabs, flags and banners, stained-glass windows or computer assisted compositions, etc.) to establish a truly personal cosmology. This mental map, which he named “the five worlds”, refers to the various levels of perception with which he associates colours (yellow for art, red for ideas, etc.). In this way the artist will invade the space of the MAC’s to plunge the visitor into the heart of his original universe and confront us with the numerous aspects which characterise human life. #mattmullican #museedesartscontemporaines #macs #representingthework #thefiveworlds #cosmology #mentalmap #retrospective #survey #exhibition.

Alongside @galleryweekendberlin, our ROSS BLECKNER exhibition has been postponed to September 11th-13th

Emerging as a prominent artist in New York during the AIDS crisis in the 1980s, Bleckner’s paintings are an investigation of change, loss, and memory, often suggesting meditations on the body, health and disease, much like a memento mori. They reflect “the idea that the body is so perfect, until it’s not perfect. It’s a fragile membrane that separates us from disaster.” His immersive paintings, whether pure abstraction of stripes or dots, or more representational renderings of birds, flowers, and brains, elicit a powerful hypnotic and dizzying effect. Smoothly layered on the canvas' surface against a darker gray background, Bleckner’s famous multicolored volumetric circles or “cells” look like droplets of blood or molecules viewed under a microscope. Currently on view at the gallery BARBARA BLOOM, 'Marriage on the Rocks’, 1986, Dimensions variable

Photographic backdrop paper; plywood construction in the shape of a double bed and bedside tables; photograph of his-and-hers watches, framed; found books with invented book covers

Despite its initial resemblance to the taciturn, narrative-obstructing objects of Donald Judd, this plywood approximation of bedroom furniture is the stripped down centerpiece of a storyline carried out with gleefully indulgent speci city through bedside books. Clues are left for the literate detective.

Scattered on the left side table are a number of books whose titles tend toward the conniving and suspicious (The Devil You Don’t, Gameplan, The Good Thief ). The cover of Fateful Embrace evokes the economy of sex, money, and power through gendered watches. On the right side, the titles speak of entrap- ment and disgust (Vanishing Ladies, The Captive, Marriage on the Rocks, Sick Friends) which shows a photograph of a group of sheep among which a stands a woman who is being grabbed from behind by male hands). This is by no means a happy story. –

‘KARLA BLACK: 20 years’ at @desmoinesartcenter
Through May 17th, 2020

Art created by Turner-prize nominated Scottish artist Karla Black is confounding to first-time viewers by virtue of the materials she uses and the color palette she employs—predominantly light blue, pink, and pale yellow pastels.

Utilizing large pieces of inexpensive paper, powdered forms of paint and plaster, glitter and cellophane, hand-sanitizing gel, bath bombs, liquid foundation, eye shadow and lipstick, her materials are ordinary. What results are sculptural forms that are large, unsubstantial, and a bit clumsy—they tip and buckle and regularly shed their powder patina. These unconventional materials and formal elements are chosen and made use of by the artist to allow her to investigate play, tactility, and creative expression.
