Imagine it's December 31 and you have a quiet moment to reflect on 2020 before ringing in the new year.
.
What word(s) do you most want to describe your year?
.
What do you want to say about yourself, your choices, your actions?
.
How do you want to have grown, personally and professionally?
.
There's great power in deciding *now* what you wish to be able to say at year-end. You can then start making it your reality *today*! Regardless of circumstances, we always get to choose who and how we wish to be in the world. ☀️

Celebration of International Coaching Week continues! Today I'm sharing a few of the (many!) coaching books I have found valuable over the years:
.
Appreciative Coaching - I learned about appreciative inquiry early in my coach training and instantly fell in love. These authors do a wonderful job applying its principles to coaching partnerships.
.
Positive Psychology in Coaching - I trained through the College of Executive Coaching led by Dr. Jeff Auerbach, coauthor of this book. I fully adhere to the concept helping people flourish through strengths, solutions, possibilities, and bringing out their best!
.
The Portable Coach - This was one of the first books I read upon learning that coaching was actually a profession! A great primer from a pioneer in the field.
.
The Business & Practice of Coaching - As with all entrepreneurial adventures, you may have the best service or product in the world, but if you don't know how to package / market it, the people who need you may not find you. This book focuses specifically on creating a strong coaching business.
.
Becoming a Professional Life Coach - Filled with fundamentals, coaching concepts, exercises, and more, I've often referred back to this resource written by two of the first Master-level coaches recognized by the ICF. I have appreciated Williams' other books as well.
.
What book has made a difference for you, either as a coach or in your professional development in general? Add to my reading list by sharing below! 😊 And thank you to @bycacademy for this #internationalcoachingweek IG prompt! Although I didn't train through them, I have received their beautiful magazine for years and appreciate the work they do!

I am ready for May - or my bullet journal is, at least! 😊 My 2020 theme is DELIGHT, and each day I record one delightful thing - small or large, planned or unexpected, personal or professional. This little activity, which takes maybe 2 minutes per day, serves as a great reminder that we get to choose what we focus on, and also that there is something delightful to find or create in each and every day. .

Plus, the creative expression of bullet journaling is delightful in and of itself! 📝 .

What brought you a bit of delight today?

Did anyone else's April turn out a bit different than planned? 🙋🏻‍♀️
.
At the end of each month (which arrives tomorrow, believe it or not!) I ask myself a few questions which I thought you might find helpful to reflect on, too:
.
🌸 What went well? What am I celebrating?
.
🌸 What didn't go well? How can I improve, change, or let go next month?
.
🌸 What did I learn? How have I grown? . 🌸 How have I contributed? How did I lead?
.
🌸 For what am I thankful?
.
My responses look a bit different this month than expected, but they are still enlightening, still valuable. I am still committed to my goals, still learning every day, still appreciating things like family time, fresh air, and the sight (and scent!) of blossoms like the one pictured here! #nofilter
.
Feel free to adopt these questions as an end of month (or end of day!) journaling exercise. And tell me in the comments below 👇 one thing you are thankful for this month!

When I ran - er, shall we say 'completed' 😁 - a marathon several years ago, miles 14-19 felt like a slog. The starting line adrenaline had worn off, and the finish line was still too far to see. . When I underwent a major surgery, my recovery seemed to vacillate continually between "Hey, this isn't so bad!" to "OH MY GOSH WILL I EVER FEEL BETTER?!" . But I did eventually cross that finish line. I did eventually heal. . And as much as I don't like to admit it, it's often in that messy middle - the slog, the plateau, the doubt, the two steps forward / one-to-twelve steps back - that the most growth occurs. . Now that I've come to realize this, I can redirect my mindset by asking different questions, like 'What am I learning?' and 'How can I flourish *right now* - even when it all feels messy?' . If you'd like to know some of the other questions and actions I find helpful, DM me and I'll send you my April newsletter, which hits in-boxes later this morning! In the meantime, what helps you flourish - even through the messy middle of a goal, project, or experience? Share your tips below! . . . . . #personalcoach #lifelessons #meaningandpurpose (Random 📷 from a few months back! ☀️) ...

Several of you have asked how I, personally, am handling this season we find ourselves in. 'You always seem so positive,' one message said earlier this week. 'Do you ever feel down, worried, overwhelmed?'
.
I am - like you, I suspect - experiencing the range of emotions that accompany change and uncertainty. I am also reminding myself that, although certainly amplified right now, change and uncertainty are always present in our lives, and we are continually learning to navigate them.
.
In addition to the strategies I share regularly on social media and my blog, here are a few things I am finding helpful:
.
🌱 Engaging in mindset work. Journaling, self-talk, choosing - and re-choosing - my dominant intention for the day, for example.
.
🌱 Dwelling in gratitude. It's been scientifically proven, many times over, to be a mood-lifter and a meaning-maker, and if I'm going to dwell on something this seems a helpful choice.
.
🌱 Leaning deeply into my purpose. This is *always* the lighthouse I return to, continually reminding me who and how I wish to be in the world. (If you'd like more on this, join my email community ASAP at ChristiHegstad.com/#signup)
.
🌱 Walking. A lot. 😁 Often with a mantra, focal point (ie, birds singing or buds on trees), prayer, or an inspiring podcast.
.
🌱 Using my strengths to serve. I feel more empowered when I am helping to empower others.
.
I am also honoring little things that bring a sense of order, like making my bed, tidying my workspace, and engaging in my morning practice.
.
Positivity isn't about constant rainbows and unicorns. 😊 I feel the full range of life's emotions - acknowledging them, allowing them, and then asking where I want to go from there. I also reach out for help, magnify optimism, and try to shower myself and others with grace.
.
How about you? What ideas, mindsets, or practices are you finding most helpful these days?

"Never in the history of calming down has anyone ever calmed down by being told to calm down." Isn't this the truth?! 😄 . If we want to feel or behave differently, change starts with our mindset - our thoughts and beliefs. To practice shifting yours, draw two columns. In the left column, write a thought that isn't serving you; in the right, write a replacement statement - something that feels more helpful, purposeful, supportive. . For example: . Shift "I am overwhelmed" to "One thing I can do right now is..." to help you focus on the next right step. . Shift "Why did I waste so much time today?" to "What will I do differently tomorrow?" to create a different future rather than dwell in the past. . Shift "I should" to "I will" or "I won't" and find relief in having made a decision. . Our thoughts and beliefs form our feelings, which then fuel our actions. The saying is true: When we change our thoughts, we change our entire experience. In today's blog (ChristiHegstad.com) I share several more examples - I hope you find it helpful! . What thoughts are you finding especially helpful these days? . . . . . #coach #personalcoach #executivecoach #growthmindset #thepowerofthought #inspirepositiveaction ...

"You never get stronger if you only do easy things," writes Marie Forleo. Anyone feel like they must be gaining super-strength lately? . I am re-reading Everything Is Figureoutable for our ASPIRE Success Club meetings this month. I love her no-nonsense, no-excuses approach reminding us that we are resourceful, capable, and stronger than we realize. . Forleo also emphasizes the power and importance of BELIEF: Believing in ourselves and our ability to figure things out, even if we don't always feel like we have the answers. "Could you imagine," she asks, "if Malala Yousafzai felt she wasn't old enough, privileged enough, or strong enough to champion girls' education?" Think of the people you admire who have made a difference in our world. It all starts with belief - with our mindset- which is something we can influence, strengthen, and change. . "There are countless people out there who need the gifts that you and you alone are here to give," writes Forleo, and I wholeheartedly agree. A strengthening and empowering book for sure! . Do you believe everything is figureoutable? What might change if you adopted that belief for a while? . . . . . . #whatyourcoachisreading #everythingisfigureoutable #bookstagram #growthmindset #personalcoach #inspirepositiveaction ...

As we navigate these unique times, are you - perhaps without even realizing it - getting stronger?
.
Sometimes we can forget how powerful our own inner resources are. Some ways to remember and build on your strength:
.
☀️ Consider challenges you have navigated in the past. What tools, resources, mindset shifts, actions, and/or beliefs helped you?
.
☀️ Continue, or develop, practices that support your strength, such as positive self-talk, movement, music, or a morning or evening routine, for example.
.
☀️ Ask yourself new questions, such as: What would help me feel strong today? How can I make the most of this very moment?
.
