Late summer/early fall across Asia Europe + the Middle East. Took an extended leave from work, moved out of my apartment (lease was up, didn’t know if I wanted to stay in SF or not), got an absurdly big backpack (see above), and booked a one-way SFO/HKG with no plans — just go/do whatever feels right, day by day.

Woke up in Mumbai wanting pasta and booked a flight to Rome via Abu Dhabi leaving that night and an Airbnb when I got to the UAE. After a week hiking Jabal Adkhdar (a mountain-top city 3h outside Muscat, which I only got to after failing a police checkpoint, abandoning my car, and hitchhiking with an Omani stranger in his van), I wanted to get out of the desert heat + see fall so made plans to go to Copenhagen the next morning. In Copenhagen, I cashed in @reneredzepinoma following me and DM’d him to get a table at Noma that night (... didn’t work ... of course it didn’t work ...). On the way back to HK, I was flying through Doha but canceled an hour before boarding to go through Heathrow and see friends in central London. In HK, I spent many days in the anti-gov protests and talking with protestors (both in protests and out at bars, restaurants, etc), being teargassed and running from water cannons. A friend was being released from his military service in Singapore and I flew down from HK in the morning to celebrate and back again late that night.

In HK now, enjoying 82 degree “fall weather” on the islands around the city. This is a fun and totally untenable way to live..

It’s impossible to put the smells, sounds, tastes, atmosphere, and absolute traffic nightmare of Mumbai into a caption.

Pretty incredible to see the pro-democracy + anti-CCP protests in person over the past week leading up to the 70th anniversary of the People‘s Republic of China yesterday. Photos really don’t do the size or importance of them justice and talking with some of the protestors—young as 12—has been eye-opening. I can also cross “get teargassed” and “run from a water cannon” off my bucket list. #standwithhk.
