My stills camera set up changes depending on what I’m doing. If I’m shooting wildlife, I have a Canon 6D MKii, or a 5D MKiv with a stupid heavy lens (400mm 2.8 IS II USM with a 1.4x or 2x extender, or something like that). Last year I got to try out the 200-400 f4 with the built in 1.4x extender. I fell in love with that lens and I need to find a way to get it in my kit.

For most everything else, I use the 6D MKii. That camera didn’t get great reviews, but I just love everything about it. The images are incredible and the build of that camera is nearly perfect. In my bag, I have either a 70-200 2.8 or f4. I like the weight of the f4 a lot and I’ll use that whenever I can. I have a 50mm 1.4 (L series) as well. I also keep the 24-104 f4 handy at all times. That lens takes some flack because it’s the standard kit lens, but my god does it ever serve well when you don’t know what kind of situation you’re walking into. - Andrew Budziak

Regarding my responsibilities, I try my best to tell these stories in a clear, concise and entertaining manner. I want my photos to be digestible. I don’t want any of the stories I tell to be needlessly complicated or unnecessarily highfalutin. I’m here to engage, not isolate. Beyond simple cropping, colour correction and maybe a vignette here or there, I don’t do much to my photos. I want my stills to be as honest as possible. A few years ago I came across the work of Belgian photographer Michel D’Oultremont. His nature photography is surreal. I went insane trying to understand his techniques and styles. After breaking down his work, and hearing what he had to say, his genius is made up of two elements: patience and honesty. That guy spends a lot of time waiting for the right moment (even compared to other patient photographers). He also does very little manipulation. He knows he needs to get it right in the field. I try to bring that to my photos as well. - Andrew Budziak

Andrew Budziak is a Toronto-based filmmaker and photographer. He specializes in telling stories about our changing world. Whether producing stories for radio, broadcast or print, Andrew’s camera is always across his shoulder capturing the places he’s visited.

Andrew worked for a number of years at the CBC as a producer and reporter for television and radio. While covering stories from the CBC’s London, UK bureau, Montreal, Winnipeg and Toronto, Andrew developed a keene and critical eye for underreported stories.

That critical eye continued to help Andrew in 2012 when he departed the journalism world to work for GlobalMedic – an international disaster response agency. Andrew led deployments around the world, coordinating aid relief in areas ravaged by natural disasters. While on deployment, Andrew’s camera was always at hand allowing him to capture stunning photos of the people he met on his journeys.

The time Andrew spent overseas in disaster zones inspired him to return to storytelling. After founding the production company 8 String Media is 2015, Andrew’s stories have focused on people who have real solutions for our ever struggling planet. - Josh Reichmann

Wildlife photography requires careful selection of destination, and you need to place yourself in a position which will yield the best possible results. Careful observation of the surroundings and getting to understand behaviour of the subjects helps hugely for anticipating action. After that, it is all about patience and being alert, and being totally prepared for action.

Photography IMHO, is about lots of practice, and knowing your equipment instinctively, without having to think when that magic moment presents itself. - Tim Driman

Shutter speed: I won’t even attempt shooting birds in flight at less than 1 / 1,600th but prefer shutter speeds of 1/2,500th or faster to freeze action. I will also set +3 EV compensation in low light conditions, and even continue the +3 EV compensation in brighter conditions as it can give me four stops of faster shutter speed.

Frame rate: As birds and many animals have a nictitating membrane (False eyelid), I always shoot more than a single frame at a time. Rule-of-thumb: The faster the action, the more frames per second. - Tim Driman

As a wildlife photographer I need, and use Auto Focus which must acquire focus fast, lock on and track a subject like a Rottweiler on a bone.
I only also use Back Button Focus (BBF), and shoot 10 frames per second for regular movement, or 20 frames for second for fast action. In each case, I shoot in short bursts, enabling the buffer to process images without jammed, or stalling the next shots.

I only shoot in MANUAL mode as it affords me the most control over how I shoot, and to achieve the fastest reaction times, I set AUTO ISO – Capped at ISO 800, but occasionally set ISO 3,200, but only when really pushed, Auto White Balance, and RAW (Compressed) which still produces very acceptable 12 Bit files. - Tim Driman

Sun Star.

Flare can also take the look of a sun star, A sun star is created by shooting straight into the sun with the lens diaphragm closed to its’ smallest aperture. Using a wide-angle lens and a small f-stop while shooting straight into the sun causes the sunrays to diffract along the edge of the aperture blades creating a sun star. The more aperture blades your lens has the more spikes your sun star will have. A lens with six aperture blades will create a six pointes star, one with eight blades an eight pointes star and so on. In addition an even number of aperture blades will give you a number of rays equal to the number of blades, while an odd number of aperture blades will result in twice the number of rays. For example a seven blade lens will create a fourteen points star. Finally straight aperture blades create sharper stars than curved blades.
Sun stars are easy to create because there is a known methodology, a workflow we can use to generate them: use a wide angle lens, point it towards the sun, close the aperture to the smallest f-stop, diffract the sun against an element or keep the sun alone in the middle of the sky, underexpose significantly and shoot. It works because we know how to do it. - Alain Briot

Flareless.

What is flare?

Let’s move on to the subject of this essay: flare. Flare is the result of light entering the lens at a steep angle. Flare can take several aspects. For example it can be a light area at the top of the image, due to light entering the lens and creating a sort of washed out area. This happens in slot canyons for example because you are basically in a dark cave shooting up towards the light with the lens pointed upwards towards the light source, either the sky or the sun, causing light to enter the lens at a steep angle and creating flare.

The same scene as in the first illustration but this time captured without flare. For me this photograph lacks the dynamic quality of the one with flare. It is the flare that makes the image. While technically flareless this one lacks the dynamic quality of the flare-filled version. Notice that this image was not processed to the same extent as my featured image and is shown as an example only. - Alain Briot

Flare is Beautiful.

I construct images. This is what I do. I don’t just capture raw photographs, process them and convert them. I alter them, warp them, and reformat them. I change their color palette, I dramatically modify their contrast and I use every digital means available to me to make them look the way I want them to look. I like to joke that I do unspeakable things to them. Except I am not joking. For me these things are not unspeakable. They are enjoyable, liberating even. But for those who continue to follow a strict film paradigm, a rigid way of processing images that is limited to adjusting color and contrast, the things I do -are- unspeakable. However for me, for someone who was never happy with the limitations that film imposed on my creativity, for someone who was trained as a painter and did not understand why shapes and colors couldn’t be molded to my desire instead of being fixed by the film they were recorded on, these things are a dream come true. A godsend. A response to my prayers. A medium that opens the doors to a full set of creative tools. I make no secret that if it was not for digital capture and processing I would have quit photography long ago. I may have gone back to painting, since this is the medium I was first trained in, or I may have done something completely different, but I would not have pursued using a medium that had so many limiting and frustrating aspects. - Alain Briot
