Burns Red Special Conversion
We undertook this conversion a couple of years ago for Nikki, and it was great fun. These Burns and newer BM models look great and are certainly terrific value, but the dimensions are just far enough out when compared to Brian’s RS that a fair bit of modification and fabrication is needed to perform a realistic conversion. The body outline is subtly different, and the inclusion of a fulcrum vibrato not only dictates the replacement pickguard length and shape (as does the overly large control rout) but crucially it cramps the pickup spacing so they’re actually in the wrong positions when compared to the original. The difference in resultant tone may be subtle but it is noticeable.
The job requires filling and re-routing for correct pickup placement as well as some meaty modification for the new vibrato and bridge system - not to mention cutting a bespoke pickguard… All in all a very involved process, but also a very satisfying one. If you’d like to read more about how we did it and see a whole lot more pics of the job, you can find our original post on our Facebook page under ‘Albums’. ...
