At long last, today is the official release of Simply Living Well!
•••
When I started writing this book in 2018, I couldn’t have known it would go out into the world during a global pandemic. Ironically enough, I wrote it as a tribute to my grandparents and great-grandparents and the resource-conscious mindset that got them through the Great Depression and the Second World War.
•••
In some ways, Simply Living Well is as timely as ever. At home these past few weeks, I’ve cracked it every single day for one recipe or another, my desire to live simply and sustainably never stronger as I wonder what the future might bring. My book looks back as much as it looks forward – a fusion of practices old and new, showing all sorts of ways to shift from a scarcity mindset to a creative mindset, to simplify and slow down, and to live frugally, self-sufficiently, and harmoniously with the natural world. •••
Simply Living Well is available at all major retailers today. It can also be ordered through local, independent bookstores as well as a few family-run businesses. If you’re keen on supporting small shops, be sure to check out: @freckledhenfarmhouse, @helenmilanhome @heritagegoodsandsupply, @junehomesupply. or @bostongeneralstore.

Thank you, always, for your support and pleases tag me if you make something from the book. I would love to see it!.

This photo will have to satisfy my craving for a little normalcy and order in my life right now😂....who’s growing head lettuce this spring?? This is Winter Density romaine. Just like it’s name suggests, this variety thrives in cooler regions and seasons. We usually transplant it into gardens from April-June, and again in September. One of the things I love most about this Winter Density is that it holds so well in the garden after reaching maturity (as opposed to bolting quickly). ✌️ What are your favorite head lettuce varieties? .

Hooray for Herbs🌿 Welcome to the first day of All Things Herbal…a miniseries on growing, harvesting & using your garden herbs. Herbs are the heartbeat of my garden. Listing all the reasons why I love them would take several posts, so rather than babble, let’s jump right in with one of my favorites that delivers calm in a cup, Chamomile.

There are two different plants known as Chamomile. Both belong to different species, but offer similar herbal properties: German Chamomile (also known as Hungarian Chamomile), is the kind I grow. This variety is an annual that’s hardy to zones 4-9 & grows to around 2’ tall. Roman Chamomile (also known as English Chamomile), is a low-growing perennial that spreads via rhizomes, making it a heaven-scented ground cover.

GROWING TIPS:
* Plant in full sun (will tolerate part-shade) in well-drained soil
* Grows in a wide range of pH, between 5.6-7.5
* Average height is 18”-24” tall for German, while Roman is a low-growing ground cover
* Start indoors, sow seed 4-6 weeks before last frost
* Direct sow outside in early spring in a well-prepared seed bed
* Seeds need light & warmth to germinate, so don’t cover. Keep moist to germinate
* Germinates in 1-2 weeks
* In the garden, space plants 8”-10” apart.
* It has shallow roots, so it's sensitive to hotter temperatures
* Flowers bloom 42-70 days from sowing * Edible flowers that actively self-sow
* Deer resistant, drought tolerant & pollinator-friendly
* Great container planting
* Companion plant to aromatic herbs (it increases nearby herbs’ essential oil production), onion, cabbage & cucumbers.

Don’t start your seedlings too early. Larger ones don’t fare well in transplanting. Rather, set seedlings out once they’ve grown their first 3-4 true leaves-around 1”-2” tall.

Next up…stories of Chamomile run amok, harvesting how-tos & titillating tales of tea🧐 Ta ta til then💚

Five facts about me... well, my garden...
* we’ve been here since 2015 and there was nothing but two trees and an awkward rhododendron when we moved in. * the planting scheme has changed numerous times. Admittedly, I jumped in too quick and should’ve been more patient the first year. Our babies then took over my time and attention. * This is my first year growing flowers for cutting. Never grown a dahlia before and now I have about 16 to keep alive. Help! * I stick to a small selection of veg for our patch that I know we eat a lot of. * My parents are my gurus when it comes to veg growing and my mum brings on all veg seedlings for me. @beehaven_flowers opened my eyes to the idea of growing cut flowers and I’ll forever look to Heidi for her superior knowledge!
Here’s my planting plan for the back of the garden - veg and cut flowers. I’ve been meaning do fo it for ages - spurred on by seeing @farmhouse_garden_diary and @garden_goddess_uk versions. It was a nice moment of escapism to get the paintbrushes out instead of watching the news. One bed is unassigned at the moment - can’t decide whether to grow some root veg - what do you think?? I am still growing more flowers but they are in the slightly more wild borders which will be used to attract wildlife as well as taking a couple of flowers from now and again. Hope you have a sunny day... looks like it’s going to be nice here in Woking ☀️.

Lime, cashew & kaffir lime raw tart.🍈
I have been super surprised at our Kaffir limes this year, they are so juicy & delicious.They are usually dry & bitter.I mostly only use the zest in curries etc..Not sure whether the drought caused the change but I'm chuffed.😉 So I am going to make a lime butter with them too. Let you know how it goes😘

I just sowed seeds inside for some of the annual flowers I plant in my veggie garden - zinnias, cosmos, marigolds and asters. 😁🌸 I will start sunflower seeds indoors too but not for another month or so as they are so fast growing. 🌻And in mid-May I’ll direct sow nasturtium seeds in my raised beds. Sadly I don’t think I will be able to get dahlia tubers this year but hopefully the rest of the blooms will make up the difference. 🌱🌼 Have you started any annual flowers inside yet? .
