Gustav Klimt, Pear Tree, 1903, Oil and casein on canvas, 101 x 101 cm, Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge.
Austrian painter Gustav Klimt was Vienna's most renowned advocator of Art Nouveau, or, as the style was known in Germany, Jugendstil. Initially successful as a conventional academic painter, he developed his own eclectic, decorative and often erotic style. His position as the co-founder and first president of the Vienna Secession ensured that this style would become widely influential. Klimt's style is highly ornamental. He favored organic lines and used a lot of gold and silver colors in his art work, certainly an heritage from his father's profession as a gold and silver engraver. His sumptuous, ornate paintings in which the figures are nearly submerged in a mosaic of jewel-like color and gold were a scandal at his time because of the display of nudity and the subtle sexuality and eroticism. Created from the 1890s until the artist's death in 1918, colorful and often poetic landscape paintings represent a relatively little-known aspect of the oeuvre of Klimt. Landscape painting enabled him to experiment. His favorite subjects include orchards, woods, gardens and villas around the Attersee in Austria. Klimt took inspiration from the Neo-Impressionists and Byzantine mosaics, to develop a very personal and formal language. Unlike the Impressionists, Klimt was not interested in atmospheric variations. His landscapes became increasingly abstract, although he continued to work directly from the motif. A particular feature of the works is their standard size and square format, a device Klimt used with their exhibition in mind. Klimt’s landscapes are now a highly admired aspect of his oeuvre.
