Can we NOT with outdoor elitism? 🤦♀️⠀
The 'outdoorsy' community can be fantastic, supportive and welcoming - but it can also be SO. BLOODY. PRETENTIOUS. Why is it that we only consider people "outdoorsy" if they dress entirely in Mountain Warehouse and live off-grid in a campervan? 🙄⠀
I am, I suppose, a "girly girl". Despite many people thinking that feminity and adventure are mutually exclusive, I spend the vast majority of my free time outdoors. Here are a few recent comments I've received:⠀
🤬 "WhY aRe YoU wEaRiNg LiPsTiCk On a HiKe?" Uhh because it looks sick?⠀
🤬 "LeGgInGs? YoU'rE nOt At ThE GyM" Mate they're comfy as, stop hating from outside the club⠀
🤬 "HiKiNg In TrAiNeRs? MuSt Be YoUr FiRsT tImE" That's a bold comment to make when I'm PASSING YOU ⠀
I know this seems petty, but stuff like this makes the community SO. INACCESIBLE. to anyone who doesn't fit the mould. If this happens to me as a white woman, I dread to imagine how much it's amplified when you're not young enough, white enough or able-bodied enough.
Have you ever felt like you didn't fit in with the nature/outdoors/adventure community? Let me know in the comments 👇 P.S. here's me enjoying nature while *gasp* WEARING A DRESS 😱 ...
