Have you found Salmonberries this season?
Salmonberry is a widely used and important plant to the First Nations people of the Pacific Northwest. There are many stories, poems, and spiritual practices around this plant. Its English name, Salmonberry, may have come from its connection to the Swainson’s Thrush/Salmonberry Bird which arrives during berry ripening to feed. Or, it may be named so because traditionally, its sprouts were peeled and eaten raw with salmon meat or dried salmon spawn.
Salmonberry fruits and leaves provide food and habitat for various animal species. Native hummingbirds rely on Salmonberry flowers for nectar in the spring. When ripening, the berries range in colour from yellow or deep red, depending on each plant and its location. They can be eaten fresh and turned into jams or used in the same way you would use blackberries or raspberries.
If you’re out collecting Salmonberries or other wild berries this summer, please be mindful of the land your harvesting from.
🌿Ask yourself: Whose Lands are you on? What animals rely on the fruits offered by that plant? How will you demonstrate an act of reciprocity for what you have just received?
Please let us know what other wild berries you’ve been finding this summer!
