G E A R // We often get caught up in the tools or camera gear we DON’T HAVE.
If you know me, you know I love new camera equipment and just gear overall. But it really pains me when I see emerging creatives crippled by the fact that they can’t afford new gear. Especially when they go on YouTube and everyone they follow has the latest and greatest. All the gear you see that I have on my account isn’t the whole picture. I didn’t just buy all this gear one day. I started with a cheap camera, cheap computer, and cheap lens. Budget items all the way. Here are some things that I kept in mind when it came to gear that may help you overcome gear lust or perspective on gear:
BUY WITH INCOMING REVENUE
I see too many creatives go broke to buy that camera or lens. They tap into their savings to buy that new piece of gear but then once they realize they aren’t making enough it stresses them out. That stress leads to desperation. Whenever you’re desperate to make money, you won’t grow as a creative in the areas you need to. Buy gear with incoming revenue. Always ask yourself, “If I buy this piece of gear, will my next gig or two pay it off?” If the answer is no, I wouldn’t buy it.
DO YOUR RESEARCH
Whenever a new camera or piece of gear comes out, we all have shiny object syndrome. We think we need it. This really applies to a lot of things in life. But in reality, when you stack it up to what you have, it might not be THAT much better. Really dive deep into that product and if the pros absolutely crush your current version, refer back to the first tip and buy it. But if you’re spending a ton of money for just one feature that you know won’t be that much different, hold off.
DON’T FOLLOW TRENDS
Everyone is different. Just because you see some other person use it to create something awesome, doesn’t mean it’s the only way you can achieve the same result. Most creators don’t really have crazy hands on experience with a bunch of different gear, they just chose a route and stuck to it. You just have to do your research and see what will work for you. ...
